ICE East of England Graduate Oliver Neve Wins Graduate and Student Papers Competition

Date:

27 JUNE 2012

The ICE 2011 Graduate and Student Papers Competition (GSPC) final was held at One Great George Street on Friday 15 June 2012. The event proved a successful and enjoyable culmination to the competition with excellent presentations, thought provoking ideas and energetic audience participation.

The competition showcases pioneering new research and projects from our graduate and student members. It also gave the audience of young engineers who are studying, or starting out in their careers, the opportunity to pick up tips on presentation skills and to quiz the finalists on their work.

The three finalists were:

  • James Cox from Bristol University (regional winner in ICE South West)
  • Andrea Charlson from Arup (regional winner in ICE London)
  • Oliver Neve from Ramboll (regional winner in ICE East of England)

Oliver Neve’s paper ‘Shaking up Dance Floor Design with Timber Concrete Composites,’ won him first place and the top prize of £1,500, the much coveted Institution Medal as well as Thomas Telford Training and ICE Publishing Virtual Library vouchers.

Second place went to Andrea Charlson for her paper ‘Counting Carbon: Practical Approaches to Life Cycle Assessment in Façade Engineering’ and third went to James Cox for his paper ‘Long-Term Dynamics of Offshore Structures, Founded on Suction Caissons’.

Attendee, Kieran Daly, Graduate Member, commented, “It was a real insight into what other graduate engineers are working on.”

Director of Membership, David Lloyd-Roach commented, "These were three excellent, informative and very different presentations that prove the Institution's future is in safe and innovative hands. You could not help but be swept along with the presenters' enthusiasm for their respective subjects."
