During his visit to the East Midlands, Professor Paul Jowitt President of the Institution of Civil Engineers made a point of visiting the new Derby Bus Station.

He said “Starting and ending a journey defines the experience. If we want public transport to be a positive choice in people’s travel behaviour we have to make it attractive. The new bus station at Derby does just that. Light, airy, clean and full of promise for the journey ahead!”
The bus station has been funded as part of a £100m mixed development on land owned by the authority. The station caters for the majority of bus services in the city and has around 120 movements an hour at peak times. The concourse is an airport style environment with automatic doors leading onto the buses. These only operate when buses enter the platforms to avoid conflicts with pedestrians and buses. There are 24 bays and five coach bays with the anticipation that up to 1000 people will use the bus station at any one time. The concourse includes offices for the main operators and an information office for passengers. Electronic display boards supplement timetable information for each bay.
Tony Gascoigne, Head of Transportation for Regeneration and Community at Derby City Council said “Following the transfer of services into the bus station we are planning a further £2m improvement to the adjacent street, The Morledge. This will be based on the Manual for Street approach with widened footways and a narrowed carriageway. The aim is to upgrade to natural materials and wrap this around the new building and along the Morledge.
