ICE SW to hold Waste Strategy Seminar in New Year

Date:

15 DECEMBER 2010

ICE South West will be holding a one day Waste Strategy Seminar at The Rougemont Hotel, Exeter on Thursday 27 January 2011.

ICE South West will be holding a one day seminar 'New Government: New Waste Strategy' at The Rougemont Hotel, Exeter on Thursday 27 January wil guest speakers from Defra, public and private sector, planners, PR specialists, the community and waste sector.

Soon after the new government was established, Caroline Spelman, Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs announced a review of all existing waste policies. In the Coalition Programme Defra is specifically charged with working towards a zero waste economy, and there are ambitions for a great expansion of Anaerobic Digestion facilities, better resource efficiency and green jobs and technologies.

There are 3 critical challenges for providing infrastructure in the sector - achieving political support, securing funding and achieving planning consent. As landfill tax rises the private sector is more likely to commit to long term developments previously implemented by the public sector under pressure from LATS fines and now under threat of severe budget reductions. In the South West there is a plethora of planning applications being processed but will these deliver the infrastructure required for a sustainable future? In addition, what role can the “Big Society” play?

This seminar will include contributions from the public and private sector, planners, PR specialists, the community and waste industry as well as Defra and will discuss how we can ensure a sustainable future for waste and resource management in the south west.
