ICE West Indies Holds HSE Seminar
The ICE West Indies Local Association (ICEWILA) has held its 4th Seminar for 2012 entitled: "The Cost of Implementing a HSE Policy in an Organisation versus the Cost of Non-Implementation".
The Seminar's Keynote Speaker was Mr. Rajesh Kandhai, OHSE Manager, of the University of the West Indies (UWI). The seminar was held at the Marriott Hotel in Trinidad and Tobago and attended by 25 persons out of a total registration of 50 persons.
The lively and interesting presentation featured hot topics on health and safety inclusive of accident prevention,accident/cost data, safety culture, safety experiences, safety auditing, insurances and the cost of prevention versus the cost of doing nothing. The presentation also featured a 12 minute video clip which was well received by the audience. The video clip reinforced the theme of the seminar and highlighted the following lessons:
1. Accidents and fatalities could be prevented by simple actions.
2. The cost as a result of the accident is significantly higher than the cost of preventing the said accident.
3. As construction professionals we are all responsible for the health, safety and welfare of our employees, the public and ourselves.
Upon delivery of the presentation, Professor T.M.Lewis engaged the audience in an interactive exercise to increase the learning outcomes of the seminar. This was followed by a 30 minute question and answer session with the majority of the questions pertaining to accident prevention and safety culture. The ICE West Indies Local Association would like to thank Mr. Rajesh Kandhai of the University of the West Indies for this opportunity to share his knowledge and experiences on a very significant topic.
