ICE launches "The Civil Engineers: The Story of the Institution of Civil Engineers and the People who Made It"

Date:

2 JUNE 2011

ICE are delighted to announce the publication of the first ever full-colour illustrated history of the great minds and ideas that shaped the world and created the Institution of Civil Engineers.

This beautiful hardback details the development of the profession over nearly 200 years and features biographies for some of the greatest engineers of all time.

Mike Chrimes, Director of Engineering Policy & Innovation at ICE, says “As Telford himself said ‘In foreign countries similar establishments are instituted by Government, and their members, and proceedings are under their control but here a very different course is being adopted, it becomes incumbent on each individual to feel that the very existence and prosperity of the Institution depends in no small degree on his personal conduct and exertion.’ So we wanted to create a book where members would be inspired to take pride in the Institution and all the great things we can achieve together.”

Hugh Ferguson, who brings a wealth of civil engineering experience from former roles such as; deputy director general of ICE, editor of NCE and Managing Director of Thomas Telford Ltd, said “The Institution’s greatest strength undoubtedly lies in the strong bond which most members feel for their parent body, a bond which allows the Institution to draw on extraordinarily large amounts of time and energy – freely given by members – for its activities. It is as if the Institution is the embodiment and expression of the scope and values of the profession the members hold so dear. If this book helps members of the profession, those wishing to join it, and those who work alongside it, to understand these bonds a little better, then it will have achieved its purpose.”

The combination of fascinating insights, from Hugh Ferguson and Mike Chrimes, and inspiring illustrations will ensure this book doesn’t rest long on coffee tables.

At just £30 this is a perfect keepsake for engineering enthusiasts and a great gift for colleagues.
