Round up: ICE’s recent campaigns to raise the profile of civil engineering

Date:

27 MARCH 2013

One of ICE’s roles is to highlight how important infrastructure is to our world and to raise the profile of civil engineers.

Here is a snapshot of some of our recent and upcoming communication campaigns targeted at various groups.

Young People – to inspire over 1,200 schoolchildren and students to take up a career in civil engineering

  • We attracted lots of young people to our stand at the Big Bang Fair in March and will be attending a series of regional Big Bang events around the UK

Government – to meet ICE calls around infrastructure

  • ICE made submissions in advance of the Chancellor’s Spring Budget to turn the National Infrastructure Plan into a set of achievable major projects
  • We also ran media campaigns and a political engagement programme to support this activity
  • ICE has followed up its budget submission with an assessment of which calls were met and what we will continue to call for.

Public at large – to raise the profile of civil engineering and the role that civil engineers play in designing, building and maintaining the infrastructure essential to our daily lives

  • ICE launched the concept of “This is Civil Engineering”, a campaign designed to raise awareness of civil engineering amongst the general public
  • The concept is being promoted in many regions of the UK
  • Banners were placed on infrastructure projects directing the public to our website to learn more about civil engineering
