The President of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) has spent time helping North East youngsters learn about bridge building and careers in construction.
Peter Hansford visited Clavering Primary School, in Hartlepool, during his two-day visit to the region. As part of the visit, he joined in with a bridge building education activity, in which teams of pupils worked together to build a replica of Middlesbrough’s Transporter Bridge out of paper tubes.
The annual visit of the Institution President to the North East will also include a climb to the top of the Transporter Bridge on Thursday 14th April, as part of the centenary of the landmark and will see some of the Transporter Bridge technical drawings at the British Steel Archive in Middlesbrough.
Mr Hansford will then visit the new Tyne Crossing, before presenting the prestigious Robert Stephenson Awards at the ICE North East annual dinner, at the Newcastle Gosforth Marriott Hotel.
A social evening on board HMS Trincomalee, hosted by ICE North East’s Graduates & Students committee, also forms part of the visit.
Mr Hansford said: “One of the greatest things we can do as an Institution is to encourage and inspire young people to become the civil engineers of the future.
“Our sector shapes the world around us, and when children such as those I have been working with today learn what it really means to be a civil engineer, it generates a real enthusiasm for learning.”
