Date:

15 JULY 2010

The ICE 2010 Graduate and Student Papers Competition (GSPC) final was held at Leeds Metropolitan University on Tuesday 22 June 2010. It was a great success and an enjoyable evening with excellent presentations, thought provoking ideas and energetic audience participation

The three finalists were:

  • David Cousins from Mabey Bridge (from ICE Wales)
  • Kevin Briggs from the University of Southampton (from ICE South East)
  • Lee Franck from Ove Arup and Partners (from ICE London)

Finalists

Lee Franck's paper on Development and Design of an Innovative Opening Mechanism for a Footbridge won her first place and the top prize of £1,500 and much coveted Institution medal.  Lee said after the event: "I am completely overwhelmed at winning and so grateful for being given the opportunity to share my ideas with such a receptive audience... As you can tell I'm extremely passionate about this project and absolutely over the moon that after my presentation the audience felt the same!"

Second place went to Kevin Briggs for his paper on Tree Influence on Seasonal Rail Movements and third went to David Cousins for his presentation on Reinforced Concrete Beam Hinge Joint Fatigue Assessment. All three presentations were of incredibly high quality and based on innovative and interesting concepts.

Wei Liu, Chair of Judges, commented: "The standard of this year's finalists was extremely high and the final was very competitive. They all demonstrated excellent knowledge of their projects, which both interested the audience and captured their imagination".

Sponsors

This year the event was kindly sponsored by Atkins and Leeds Metropolitan University. Atkins generously donated the prize money and gave an interesting insight into the company at the start of the evening and Leeds Metropolitan's venue was an excellent location for the final.
