Leicester engineers Sue Shaw and Ruth Taylor have both been awarded Fellowship of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE).

Respected internationally, ICE Fellowship is the highest grade of ICE membership and a benchmark for those practising at the top level within the civil engineering profession.

Only those with a position of responsibility in the planning, design, construction, maintenance or management of important engineering work can be awarded this level of membership.

Sue and Ruth bring the total number of female Fellows in the East Midlands to three.  Female members make up less than 2% of the 174 Fellows in the region.

Malcolm Jackson, Regional Director – ICE East Midlands, commented: “Gaining ICE Fellowship is an exceptional achievement and I warmly congratulate Sue and Ruth on joining an elite group of civil engineers.
“This highly-respected accolade recognises a significant contribution to the civil engineering profession and seniority in the industry.

“I am particularly pleased to welcome two female Fellows and I hope their appointment will encourage other senior female engineers with the industry who have the necessary skills and attributes to come forward and apply for ICE Fellowship.”

Sue, who lives in Barkby, is employed as Regional Manager for the Babcock International Group – Nuclear Business Unit, based in Whetstone.

Some of her career highlights have included: building a relationship with EDF Energy within a framework agreement, leading to the successful delivery of a large programme of work and the delivery of 140 nuclear critical and high risk items over three years.

Sue commented: “I am proud to have achieved Fellowship of the Institution and appreciate that my peers within the profession recognise that I have reached a sufficient level of competence to justify such an honour.

“I hope this will encourage others to emulate me and that we can increase membership of the Institution by civil engineers from whichever branch of the profession that they work.

“Professional engineers are undervalued within society, and I hope that demonstration that there are high levels of attainment within the Institution will enhance our status.”

Ruth, from Oadby, is an Associate with Pick Everard.  She said on becoming an ICE Fellow: “I am very pleased to become a Fellow as I believe that achieving the highest grade of membership of the ICE indicates a level of recognition by my peers and that is always encouraging.”
