Two local engineering students from Hertford and Lowestoft, have been awarded a scholarships for their studies from ICE.

Daniel Watson, who is currently enrolled on the FcSc Civil Engineering Course at Anglia Ruskin University in Chelmsford, and Wesley Soloman, who is currently enrolled on the HND Civil Engineering Course at City College Norwich, are two of 22 students to be awarded financial support through the ICE QUEST technician scholarship scheme this year.

Supported by industry and the Institution, the scholarship offers financial assistance, up to £1500 per candidate, to outstanding students studying for a qualification that could lead to professional accreditation as an engineering technician. Almost £30,000 was awarded in the 2010/2011 round.

Glen Owen congratulated Daniel and Wesley, saying being awarded the scholarship is a significant achievement and will provide a head start to becoming professionally qualified.

“I congratulate both Daniel and Wesley on their achievement, competition is tough and only those who show real commitment to the profession, leadership and ambition are chosen. Attracting the best talent into the industry is crucial in the light of challenges ahead of us to deliver low carbon, fit for purpose infrastructure for the future. Technicians play a vital role, providing invaluable technical and practical support to civil engineering teams. By supporting students financially through QUEST ICE hopes to encourage more students to consider the technician route to professional qualification.”

Fifty five students applied for the award, with short listed applicants attending interviews throughout the UK. Including students awarded the scholarships last year who are still studying, 36 students are currently supported by the scheme.
