Matt Taylor wins inaugural Jean Venables Medal

Date:

31 MAY 2011

Matt Taylor EngTech TMICE from Atkins’ Stockton office is the inaugural winner of ICE’s Jean Venables Medal.

The award recognises and celebrates the best performance by a newly qualified Technician Member at a Technician Professional Review (TPR).

The medal is named after Jean Venables, ICE President from 2008 to 2009, who contributed significantly to raising the profile of ICE Technician Members and who continues to actively participate in this initiative.

One medal is awarded during a calendar year and winning the award does great credit to Matt and the training he received from Atkins in preparation for his Review.

Matt sat his Review in the autumn 2010 session in York. During each session reviewers are asked to nominate potential recipients(s) for:

  • exhibiting a passion and enthusiasm for civil engineering
  • demonstrating an ongoing participation in ICE activities
  • enhancing the profession of civil engineering
  • outstanding qualities in all attributes

Matt came out on top from more than 60 Technician candidates across the spring and autumn sessions across the country. His reviewers commented that “it was a pleasure to review him” and, having nominated him for the medal, they were delighted Matt had won.

In recognition of his achievement, Matt will be invited to receive his medal at the 2011 ICE Annual Awards Ceremony due to take place at One Great George Street on 2 September. Matt will also receive a £500 cash prize.

Keeks Wijesinghe, Business Manager for Atkins, commented: ‘This is a great achievement for Matt and sets him in good stead for rapid progression through to Incorporated status with ICE. Credit should also go to Mike Chater, our local SCE, and Rob Lynas, his line-manager, for giving him guidance, support and direction during his preparation for the review.’
