Charles Brooks was awarded the 2013 ICE James Rennie Medal for his project report on Canary Wharf Crossrail Station, while another two awards were recently given for Technician and Member Professional Review.

The James Rennie Medal is awarded to the best Chartered Professional Review candidate from 2012.

A word from the winner

On winning the medal, Charles (pictured, with ICE Senior Vice President Geoff French) said: “I’m absolutely delighted to have won the James Rennie Medal. I was fortunate enough to work on a fantastic project in great teams, and it’s thanks to all these people that I was able to learn so much and gain such valuable experience in my early career.”

Three shortlisted finalists, Charles, from Arup, Joshua Macabuag, formerly of AECOM and Adam Smith, a principal engineer with Hyder Consulting, were selected from over 1,100 Chartered Professional Review candidates. Each finalist presented their project report in front of a packed audience in the Telford Theatre at One Great George Street in London.

Three complex projects

Alasdair MacLennan, chair of the judging panel praised the candidates for demonstrating a high level of responsibility and very sound engineering knowledge on three complex projects. He added, ‘Charles presented his role very clearly, with good use of visual aids, and responded to questions calmly and with authority.’

This year’s competition was again sponsored by Arup, AECOM, Bam Nuttall and Costain. A recording of the event can be viewed on the ICE website.

'Celebrating the breadth of our membership'

ICE’s Director of Membership, David Lloyd-Roach, said, ‘The James Rennie Medal Award has firmly established itself on the calendar of our Graduate members and their mentors as part of the training for Chartered Professional Review. ICE is also proud that the Jean Venables and Tony Chapman Medal Awards can join it in recognising and celebrating the value of the full breadth of ICE's professional qualifications’.

Richard Bamford from VolkerFitzpatrick was awarded the Jean Venables Medal, for the best Technician Professional Review candidate of 2012.

Lindsay Tassell from Mott MacDonald won the Tony Chapman Medal, awarded to the best Member Professional Review candidate of 2012.

All three winners will be presented with their medal at the ICE Annual Awards Ceremony on 18 October 2013.
