Northern engineering projects praised with awards

ICE North East Robert Stephenson Award Winners announced

The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) North East has announced its winners for this year’s prestigious Robert Stephenson Awards.

A flood relief scheme in South Tyneside and a bridge re-construction project in Stockton have been announced as the overall winners in their respective categories.

The Newland Court Flood Relief Scheme in South Tyneside, submitted by Northumbrian Water, Mott Macdonald and the contractor Seymour Ltd, received the prize in the Under £4 million category. Commendations were also made to a bridge deck refurbishment in Gateshead and emergency bridge repairs in Northumberland.

Greg Lutton, Chairman of ICE North East said: “The judges were particularly impressed with the combined efforts of the Newland Court project team to deliver this flood relief scheme.  The project sought to minimise disruption to the local community by adopting a sustainable approach to material reuse to create amenity areas for local benefit.  An innovative design solution was selected to minimise the volume of excavated material and maximise safety during construction and operation.”

Picking up the winning award in the Over £4 million group was the Tees River Bridge Re-Construction, Stockton-on-Tees submitted by Network Rail, HBPW Consulting Ltd and Carillion Civil Engineering. A commendation was also given to a bypass project in Northumberland together with a special environmental award for a project in Middlesbrough.

The awards were presented by Professor Paul Jowitt, President of ICE at Gosforth Marriott Hotel, during his visit to the region.

Paul Jowitt said: “The Tees River Bridge project highlights everything we celebrate with these awards. Exemplary engineering skill and innovation was used to overcome major technical difficulties and unforeseen site conditions to deliver the project in a dynamic manner within tight site constraints. The re-construction of the bridge being a great example of North East civil engineering.”

The A1 Allerdene Bridge Deck Refurbishment, Gateshead, (submitted by Highways Agency, A ONE and Balfour Beatty Civil Engineering Ltd) and Alnwick Lion Bridge Refurbishment, Northumberland (submitted by Northumberland County Council, n3 partnership and Carillion Civil Engineering) received commendations in the Under £4 million category.

The A69 Haydon Bridge Bypass, Northumberland (submitted by Highways Agency, Capita Symonds, CVC Highway Solutions; Volker Stevin & Hanson Heidleburg) was awarded commendation in the Over £4million group.

A special environmental award was given to Bran Sands RSTC Advanced Digestion in Middlesbrough submitted by Northumbrian Water Ltd, Aker Solutions, MWH, Entec UK Ltd, Faithful & Gould also in the Over £4million category.

Greg Lutton said: “The Robert Stephenson Awards celebrate the best projects in North East civil engineering, the nominations for the awards are always of the highest standard and this year was no different.

“The winners were chosen because of their design, skill, innovation and overall delivery of the project. We have some of the best examples of civil engineering right here in the North East, the award gives us the chance to highlight them.”
