The restoration of Newport Iron Bridge and the repair of Telpyn Bridge in Denbighshire also won awards, and projects on the Kennet and Avon Canal and the Ricker Gill Bridge in Cumbria were commended. The reconstruction of the Welsh Highland Railway won a special mention.
About the awards
The awards were established 14 years ago by ICE's Panel for Historical Engineering Works, together with the County Surveyors Society (CSS) and English Heritage, to 'recognise and encourage excellence and innovation in conservation'.
The ceremony for the 2011 HBIA was held at ICE on 9 February when the President, Richard Coackley, presented certificates to the winning teams, which included representatives from the clients, consultants and contractors involved.
Priorities and objectives
Working in partnership with ADEPT (the successor to the CSS), English Heritage, British Waterways and Network Rail, along with support from New Civil Engineer, the awards and the ceremony are fully sponsored and attract non-members into the Institution.
This year for the first time efforts are being made to encourage the winners to write papers about their projects for the ICE Proceedings, or to produce case studies from them for the ICE website.
Further information on the awards can be found on ICE's topic pages.
