‘Careers in engineering will undoubtedly play an important role in our country’s future’ – says Rob Wilson MP

The MP for Reading East, Rob Wilson, visited Leighton Park School today to attend Engineering Your Future (EYF) – a one day careers event which aims to show sixth form students that engineering is a career worth pursuing. Over 100 students from schools across Reading took part.

Supported by HR Wallingford, Foster Wheeler, BP and National Grid, the day was split into five interactive sessions hosted by professionals from different engineering disciplines, enabling students to experience for themselves the rewards that a career in civil, electrical, mechanical, chemical or any other engineering discipline, can provide. A career ‘speed dating’ session was the highlight of the day, giving the students an opportunity to learn about the profession from engineers currently working for a variety of engineering companies.

EYF is sponsored by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) and jointly coordinated by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, the Institution of Engineering and Technology, the Institution of Chemical Engineers and STEMNET (Berkshire contract held by the University of Reading).

Rob Wilson, Conservative MP for Reading East, said:

“I am very pleased to support the Engineering your Future careers event. I was delighted to be part of the Science & Technology Committee when we reported on the future of Engineering. The new coalition Government is committed to building a skilled economy and it is initiatives such as these which will inspire today’s youngsters and help us to ensure that we achieve our goals.  With potential ‘grand projects’ currently being debated, such as high-speed rail and nuclear power amongst others, careers in engineering will undoubtedly play an important role in our country’s future.”

John Laverty, Institution of Civil Engineers, said:

“A career in engineering is an important and rewarding one, and the Engineering Your Future events have inspired many talented young people to make a difference in the world through becoming an engineer.

“The UK needs a world class engineering skills base in order to meet the challenges of the coming decades, ensure quality of life and sustainable economic growth. I am delighted that Rob Wilson MP was able to come along today to show his support for the profession.”

John Dunston, Head, Leighton Park School said:

“We were delighted to be able to host another major event at the school, reflecting Leighton Park’s constant commitment to the development of the teaching of science and engineering. We are very pleased to welcome Rob Wilson MP and pupils from many local schools to Leighton Park for this important educational initiative.”
