Nick Ramsey's presentation to ICE WALA - 22 October 2012

Nick Ramsey, a highly experienced Geotechnical Engineer and MICE, MIE Aust gave a lively presentation to a packed audience (over 94 attendees) comprising a mix of ICE and EA members representing engineering and construction professionals in WA. The presentation title Nick chose is catchy and his main topic of discussion was driven steel pile foundation. He elaborated on methods of predicting pile capacities and the number of variables that affect design and installation i.e., construction methods, pile embedment, it’s roughness, friction fatigue, post-installation effects and the type and rate of loading. Nick then spoke about the importance of carrying out  appropriate geotechnical investigations and interpretation thereof and rounded off his presentation by explaining some methods of interpretation of GI findings. The presentation was captivating and audience participation remained high judging by the number of questions that were asked at the end. Clearly geotechnical engineering remains very topical in our region as it is in many other parts of the world.
