ICE East Midlands Regional Chairman, Robert Armitage, has been awarded Fellowship of the Institution.

Respected internationally, ICE Fellowship is the highest grade of ICE membership and a benchmark for those practising at the top level within the civil engineering profession.

Only those with a position of responsibility in the planning, design, construction, maintenance or management of important engineering work can be awarded this level of membership.

Robert was presented with his Fellowship certificate by ICE President, Richard Coackley, at an admission ceremony held at ICE headquarters in Westminster, London.

Malcolm Jackson, ICE East Midlands Regional Director, commented: “Gaining ICE Fellowship is an exceptional achievement and I warmly congratulate Robert on joining an elite group of civil engineers.

“This highly-respected accolade recognises a significant contribution to the civil engineering profession and seniority in the industry.”

Robert, who lives in Beeston, is a Director of URS (formerly Scott Wilson), based at Chetwynd Business Park, Chilwell.

When asked about the achievement which gave him most pride, Robert stated “being able to grow a small, specialised team of a few individuals into a company of nearly 200 staff, with a reputation across the UK and overseas for providing innovation and technical excellence.”

This achievement was recognised by the British Expertise Innovation Award in 2010/11 for development of Total Route Evaluation: A Strategy for Improved Utilisation of Trackbed Maintenance and Renewal Expenditure.

Robert also commented: “Civil engineering provides a wide range of opportunities and has enabled me to follow several different areas of interest during my career.”

“I am proud to be recognised by ICE and pleased that I have been able to contribute to engineering knowledge in such a way that it has made a real difference to the approach we now adopt for maintaining and upgrading our transportation infrastructure, whether highways, airports or railways.”
