Richard Coackley Visits Cornwall

Date:

13 AUGUST 2012

ICE South West hosted a visit from ICE President Richard Coackley in Cornwall on 6th and 7th August.

Richard arrived in Newquay on the afternoon of 6th August. He was given a tour of the airport and an insight into how the facility was transformed from military use to civilian.

The visit continued on the morning of 7th August, with a visit to the Hayle Regeneration Project. The President was given a presentation on the nature of the project and its development, before having a tour of the site. This followed on to a presentation about the Wave Hub Project, which comprises an offshore electrical system installed off the North Coast of Cornwall.

The President was then taken to the Environment and Sustainability Institute on the Cornwall Campus of Exeter University at Tremough, where he was given an insight into the vision, research and economic impact of the project.

The final stop of the day was the RNLI Lizard Lifeboat Station. The new boathouse, completed in 2011, securely houses the 16m Tamar lifeboat and offers a multitude of facilities, including a new training room for crew members. It is situated at Kilcobben Cove and is founded mainly on rock.

Speaking about his final visit of the day, Richard commented: "This is a wonderful example of clever engineering. Visiting the project showed how challenging the construction of the lifeboat house would have been considering the limited access to the bottom of the cliff. The highlight of the visit was getting the chance to tour the magnificent lifeboat and then watch as it was launched out to sea.”
