ICE North East has awarded a scholarship to a student from the region. Sam Robinson is a civil engineer technician at Bingham Yates & Partners, in Carlisle, and studies at Newcastle College.

The Queen’s Jubilee Scholarship Trust (QUEST) was set up in 1977 to support and encourage education in civil engineering; however, this is only the third year in which the QUEST Technician Scholarships have been presented.

Sam, from Carlisle, is in the first year of a two-year part time Foundation Degree in Civil Engineering. He was awarded a National Certificate in Civil Engineering Double Distinction and City & Guilds Level 3 2D CAD distinction in 2011.

The scholarships provide financial assistance for those who are studying either full or part time towards an engineering technician qualification. Each successful applicant is awarded up to £1,500 to support them for the duration of their course.

The application for the award required education, employment and qualifications information, references from college tutors and a personal statement.

This month the budding engineer learned he had been successful. Sam said: “I have an extensive interest in the construction industry and feel constantly amazed and inspired at the innovative and inventive solutions those in the industry continually produce, in order to solve the day to day challenges they are faced with. It is my personal ambition to one day fall into this category and help shape not only the world we live in but also how we live in it.”

Stephen Larkin, regional director of ICE North East, said: “This QUEST Technician Scholarship will prove a massive boost for Sam’s career within the industry and it is a pleasure to be able to present this award, which is well-respected, highly competitive and attracts applicants of the highest calibre.

“We wish Sam every success with his studies and look to seeing him develop within the industry.”
