Sir John Armitt to join ICE Presidential team

The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) has elected Chairman of the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) Sir John Armitt to its Presidential team, with a view to him becoming the leading engineering body’s President.

Sir John Armitt will take up a post as succeeding vice president in November 2012. This puts him in line to become President in 2015, subject to formal election by ICE Council.

ICE President Richard Coackley said:

“Sir John brings extensive experience of the profession and the challenges it faces to the Presidential team. Most recently his expert leadership of the ODA has shown his dedication to excellence in civil engineering, particularly through driving best value as he has succeeded in delivering a world-class Olympics site on time and on budget. We are very excited to welcome him onto the team.”

Sir John, a Fellow of the ICE, received a knighthood in the 2012 New Year Honours List for his services to engineering and construction. Prior to being appointed as Chairman of the ODA in 2007 he was Chief Executive of Network Rail.
