Two Derby engineering students have been awarded a prestigious scholarship for their studies from ICE East Midlands.
Joshua Finbow (18) and Ricky Morgan (21) are both in in the first year of a Fd Eng course at the University of Derby.
They are two of 22 students to be awarded financial support through the ICE QUEST technician scholarship scheme this year.
Supported by industry and the Institution, the scholarship offers financial assistance, up to £1,500 per candidate, to outstanding students studying for a qualification that could lead to professional accreditation as an engineering technician.
Almost £30,000 was awarded in the 2010/2011 round.
Josh, who is hoping to graduate in two years time with a degree in Civil and Infrastructure Engineering and work as a planning engineer, said of the scholarship: "to be awarded the ICE East Midlands QUEST technician scholarship is a huge honour!
"To even get an interview from a very strong field of candidates was an achievement in itself. I am passionate about the civil engineering industry and the challenges that it poses every day.
"I would like to thank Jackson Civil Engineering for their continued support towards my chosen career and fully intend to make the most of this opportunity given to me by the institution."
Ricky is hoping to specialise in structures and aim to complete a Masters degree in Structural Engineering. He added: "I feel exremely lucky to be given a close connection with an institution that will be heavily involved with my future career and advise anybody who has the chance to gain a scholarship with the ICE to put the effort in to make it happen."
ICE East Midlands Regional Director, Malcolm Jackson, commented: "I’d like to send my congratulations to Josh and Ricky on their achievement, competition is tough and only those who show real commitment to the profession, leadership and ambition are chosen.
"Attracting the best talent into the industry is crucial in the light of challenges ahead of us to deliver low carbon, fit for purpose infrastructure for the future.
"Technicians play a vital role, providing invaluable technical and practical support to civil engineering teams. By supporting students financially through QUEST ICE hopes to encourage more students to consider the technician route to professional qualification."
Fifty five students applied for the award, with short listed applicants attending interviews throughout the UK. Including students awarded the scholarships last year who are still studying, 36 students are currently supported by the scheme.
