Technician QUEST scholarship winners

Congratulations to HiIary Hargreaves and Sharlene Moffat, winners of the first ever ICE NW Technician QUEST awards.

Student members attending any NW course accredited to EngTech were eligible for the scholarships which are awarded on the basis of academic ability, ambition, initiative, commitment to civil engineering and the potential to excel in the industry.

Hilary HargreavesHilary, who works for Lancashire County Council as a Technical Support Officer and studies at Bolton Community College, was commended by the Awards Panel for her high level of motivation, the pride she takes in her work and in her achievements, and the way she was managing to balance various commitments along with her studies. Hilary’s reaction: “I was really excited to be awarded this scholarship and I am already seeing the benefits at work with increased responsibility. It has also given me a lot of more confidence in my current role and in continuing with my college studies.”

Sharlene MoffatSharlene, a student at University of Bolton works for Colas UK as a Pavement Engineer. The Panel was impressed by her mature and confident attitude and her commitment to her academic course and career in civil engineering - as evidenced by attendance at evening meetings and other ‘out-of-work’ activities. Sharlene said: “My employers are over the moon as well, they have already started to give me more responsibilities at work, which is exactly what I’d hoped the award would help me achieve.”

The Awards Panel were impressed with the quality of submissions overall and it is intended that 2 further Technician QUEST Scholarships will be available in 2011/2012.
