The Briefing newsletter goes electronic

Date:

6 OCTOBER 2010

A new format for ICE Yorkshire and Humber's Briefing newsletter.

The September 2010 edition of the Briefing newsletter has been published solely in electronic form for the first time. In a similar fashion to the paper version, readers turn the pages with a click of the mouse. To view September's edition, please click here.

Articles include a write-up of the Nuclear vs Alternative Energy meeting on 8th July, and TMICE Success at Leeds Metropolitan University. Past ICE President Jean Venable's receives a CBE Award in the Queen's Birthday Honours, and Y&H's 2009-10 Chair Ian Parke and incoming Chair David Neeve offer a warm welcome and recap on recent events.

If you have not read electronic magazines before, it may take a few minutes to familiarise yourself with the controls. Some additional help with viewing the electronic Briefing is included below:

View
The electronic Briefing is best viewed in “Full Screen” mode – you may select this by clicking on the button which says “Full Screen” in the black bar at the top of your screen. You can press the Esc key at any time to exit the Full Screen mode, or hover your mouse towards the top of the screen whilst in Full Screen mode, and the control bar will appear – click X to exit.

Navigate
There are several ways to navigate the pages of the Briefing – you may click on the greyed-out edge of each page, and the page will turn for you. You may also select from the page snapshots at the bottom of the screen in order to move through the pages. As mentioned above, if you hover your mouse towards the top of the screen in Full Screen mode, the control bar will appear which has arrows enabling you to go backwards or forwards in the document.

Zoom
If you find the text is a little small, you can zoom-in by clicking once anywhere on the document, then move your mouse around without clicking to view the text in Zoom mode. Click again to return to normal view.

Layout
You may view the Briefing as intended (in “magazine” view - two-to-a-page), or if you prefer, as single pages, or as one long scrolling page. Select the layout you would prefer from the control bar at the top.

Hyperlinks
As the Briefing is in electronic format, hyperlinks within the publication can now be followed to connect with other documents and pages.

Printing and Downloading
At present it is only possible to download a pdf of the publication by logging in to the Issuu.com website. A pdf may be preferable to some readers, but this will not be the interactive "page-turn" edition you see online. Printing is possible without logging in, and pages can be printed if you wish to distribute some or all of the newsletter offline.

As with most new things, it may take a bit of getting used to. If you have any comments about the electronic Briefing in general, or any difficulties with viewing the publication, please contact Stephanie Thomas Stephanie.Thomas@ice.org.uk
