'This is Civil Engineering' campaign launches in Scotland
ICE Scotland has launched an innovative campaign; This is Civil Engineering, to build public awareness of how civil engineering projects have shaped our daily lives.
Barr Construction is the first Scottish based firm to support the campaign by displaying This is Civil Engineering banners at a prominent retail development in the west of Edinburgh.
Large scale banners have been erected on the steel structure and hoardings at the site on Logie Green Road.
Barclay Chalmers, Managing Director of Barr Construction and Chairman of Glasgow and West of Scotland, said: "I am delighted that my dual role allows me to launch this scheme in Scotland. One of the main drivers for the ICE is to inspire young people to choose a career in Civil Engineering. Similarly for Barr, the future of the company depends upon bringing into the business talented school leavers and graduates who will be key to the growth of the company."
“With Scotland’s rich heritage in world renowned civil engineering hopefully this campaign will encourage many more youngsters to consider entering what is undoubtedly a very rewarding career. People interested in learning more about a career in Civil Engineering can simply scan the QR code on the banners with their smartphones to be directed to the campaign web site to learn more.”
From roads and bridges to structures, utilities and windfarms, the campaign will show just how Scotland’s key infrastructure is being delivered by civil engineers.
Sara Thiam, Regional Director for ICE Scotland, said: “A recent survey of members of the public suggested that many people just aren’t aware of what civil engineering is. Yet we all rely on services provided by those in the industry every day so it’s time to shine a light on exactly what civil engineering is.
“This is an exciting new initiative which encourages people to learn more about the industry and we hope may even encourage young people to think about becoming the civil engineers of the future. We hope that many more organisations in the country will also join the campaign and spread the word.”
