Wales Civil Engineering Awards Shortlist Announced

Date:

12 MARCH 2013

ICE Wales Cymru has announced the shortlist for the prestigious Project Awards 2013. The annual Project Awards celebrate the contribution of civil engineering to Wales by recognising schemes for their excellence in concept, planning and design, contract management and construction.

Three projects have been shortlisted for the George Gibby Award (for projects over £3m) and five for the Roy Edwards Award (for projects less than £3m).

Two of the projects in the £3m and over category are north Wales coastal defence schemes – highly topical, as the management of flood risk is becoming increasingly important – West Rhyl Coastal Defence Scheme in Denbighshire and Borth Coastal Defence Scheme in Ceredigion. The third scheme shortlisted is also located in north Wales: the Wrexham Industrial Estate Access Road.

A wide range of projects with a value of less than £3m have made the shortlist including two town regeneration projects; a sewerage treatment works; a highway project and a scheme that has actually been constructed in Uganda.  The projects are: Blaenau Ffestiniog Regeneration scheme (Gwynedd); Pontypool Town Centre Regeneration (Torfaen); Llanfyllin Sewage Teatment (Powys);  Ffordd Amazon Stage 2 (Neath Port Talbot); and Shalom Phase 1A in Uganda, which was designed and supervised by the young Welsh civil engineers group EFOD.

Keith Jones, Director ICE Wales Cymru said: "I am pleased to see such a wide range of projects representing the many aspects of civil engineering in Wales on the final shortlist.  We are proud to be able to celebrate the contribution of civil engineering to society through the Project Awards and I look forward to the winners being announced on 17 May at our Awards ceremony in Cardiff, in the company of the President of the Institution, Professor Barry Clarke."
