West Midlands civil engineers hear about opportunities for clean-coal technology

Date:

22 FEBRUARY 2011

Civil engineers from around the West Midlands have heard how the region can lead the way in developing technology needed to ‘capture’ carbon dioxide and reduce international greenhouse gas emissions.

The event at the Arup Campus in Solihull was organised by ICE West Midlands, chaired by Richard Coackley, ICE Vice President with Chairman of the Energy and Climate Change Select Committee Tim Yeo MP the guest speaker.

Carbon capture and storage (CCS) involves preventing CO2 generated from fossil fuels in power stations from escaping, capturing it, turning it into liquid and storing it, either underground or undersea.

It is recognised as a vital part of efforts globally to meet the targets to cut C02 emissions but faces major challenges because of the high capital investment required.

More than 60 delegates heard how organisations in the West Midlands are working to tackle these challenges including a partnership of specialist consultants Yellow Wood Energy, law firm Martineau and Arup, in addition to construction giants Amec and energy providers E.On and Scottish and Southern Energy.
