NewcastleGateshead’s successful Bridges Festival earlier this month saw thousands flock to Newcastle Quayside and Gateshead Quays to take part in a weekend of family activities, shows and games, with the many bridges that cross the Tyne acting as the background to the celebrations.

On a wave of post-war optimism, Manchester's planners dreamt of visionary infrastructure projects to modernise the city. This exhibition showcases four of the proposed projects' drawings, videos, promotional materials and contemporary newspaper cut-outs. Two of the projects went ahead and two never made it from the draughtsman's drawing board, and have been gathering dust until now.

Paddington Station roof wins HBIA

Winners
A £45 million project to refurbish the roof of Paddington Station has emerged as one of the winners at the 2011 Historic Bridge and Infrastructure Awards.

The restoration of Newport Iron Bridge and the repair of Telpyn Bridge in Denbighshire also won awards, and projects on the Kennet and Avon Canal and the Ricker Gill Bridge in Cumbria were commended. The reconstruction of the Welsh Highland Railway won a special mention.
