Jakarta and Earthquakes

Has tectonic activity died down in and around Java? Both 2011 and 2010 were relatively quiet with regards to earthquakes along the Sunda Arc, although we probably all remember the M=7.8 quake which affected Nias and surrounding islands on 7 April 2010. The last major damaging earthquake in the region occurred on 30 September 2009 when Padang in Sumatra suffered from the effects of the M = 7.6 earthquake, which caused major loss of life and property.

BGA: The Shard of Glass

BGA/ICE members were treated to a fascinating talk by three experts on 10th April describing the challenges of building the foundations of London’s latest iconic building, The Shard of Glass, while ensuring one of its oldest and busiest railway hubs at London Bridge continued to function without interruption.

BGA MSc Dissertation Prize awarded

6 MARCH 2013

The second BGA MSc Prize has recently been awarded to Marina Sideri of Imperial College. The prize, for MSc dissertations carried out in 2012, is open to students of any ground engineering courses, but entrants must be nominated through their course co-ordinator.
