ICE Germany visits the new headquarters of the European Central Bank, Frankfurt

The European Central Bank (ECB) is seldomfar from the front pages of the broadsheet press in every country in Europe. The decisions taken by ECB boss Mario Draghi and the European politicians who influence the ECB affect almost everyone in Europe. Many TV news bulletins include a shot of the large Euro symbol in front of the ECB’s temporary home in Frankfurt.

Water is the key to our existence and until recently most of Europe has been well provided and so water has been a low priority politically. This has changed recently with expanding populations and higher expectations compounded by climate change. It was thus with pleasure and great interest that we welcomed Chris Binnie to guide us through the problems and possible solutions relating to water resources in Europe.

Challenges in the design of foundation piles for offshore wind parks

RWE Innogy GmbH is planning the construction of the first phase of the offshore wind farm Innogy Nordsee in Germany’s North Sea. The sub area IN1 extends over an area of 41 km², in which 54 wind turbines with a total output of 332,1 MW will be constructed. 6,15 MW REpower turbines will be installed on pre piled jackets. The Foundation piles of the jacket structure will be driven with a template at an approximate water depth of -28 mLAT to a maximum pile toe level of -45m below mudline.

ICE NL visit to Rokin subway station

On Saturday the 29th of September the Dutch Branch of the ICE organized a site visit to the Rokin subway station of the new North – South subway line in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The visiting members were hosted by Joep Houtenbos en Tonny Johanna of the Rokin construction team.

A2 Calatayud Alfalarín project

In May 2008 Currie & Brown (UK) was appointed as Technical Advisor for Lenders to the A2 - Calatayud-Alfajarín Project. Its contract included: (1) Due Diligence prior to financial closing, (2) Construction monitoring and reporting. Ferrovial has overall responsibility for the design, build, finance and operation & maintenance of 107.24 km of the existing Madrid/Barcelona A2 motorway over the 19-year period.

As part of the series of evening lectures and presentations organised by ICE France, Geoffrey Smith, FICE, Barrister and partner of PS Consulting, presented on 19th November 2012 the main differences between French and UK construction contracts at Egis Bâtiments’ offices in Montreuil, Paris. The lecture, which was followed by the AGM, was attended by 11 ICE members.
