The European Central Bank (ECB) is seldomfar from the front pages of the broadsheet press in every country in Europe. The decisions taken by ECB boss Mario Draghi and the European politicians who influence the ECB affect almost everyone in Europe. Many TV news bulletins include a shot of the large Euro symbol in front of the ECB’s temporary home in Frankfurt.

Challenges in the design of foundation piles for offshore wind parks

RWE Innogy GmbH is planning the construction of the first phase of the offshore wind farm Innogy Nordsee in Germany’s North Sea. The sub area IN1 extends over an area of 41 km², in which 54 wind turbines with a total output of 332,1 MW will be constructed. 6,15 MW REpower turbines will be installed on pre piled jackets. The Foundation piles of the jacket structure will be driven with a template at an approximate water depth of -28 mLAT to a maximum pile toe level of -45m below mudline.

Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER), Germany

The former DDR airport at Berlin Schönefeld is being expanded to the south to become Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER), the new unified airport for the German capital. The historic city airport of Tempelhof has already been closed to traffic and Berlin's third airport, Tegel, is also set to close when operations commence on the 3rd June 2012. The two Berlin airports handled a total of 22.3 million passengers in 2011.

Electrical Pumped Storage System at Vianden, Luxembourg

Vianden is a picturesque town nestling in the Our valley and overlooked by a magnificent medieval chateau. Less well know is that hidden in the mountain behind the chateau is one of the largest pump storage systems in Europe. Plans are afoot to enlarge the system and this was the catalyst for the ICE Luxembourg Local Association on Friday 11th June 2010.

Danish Contractors Start Work on Sheringham Shoal Offshoe Wind Farm

On 24 June 2010, Danish contractor MT Højgaard installed the first foundation for the Sheringham Shoal Offshore Wind Farm, which is located off the coast of Norfolk in England. Over the next nine months, MT Højgaard will install an additional 89 foundations for the 35 km2 offshore wind farm, which will supply electricity to 200,000 British households.

Lochnov Valley Site Visit, Prague, Czech Republic
