ICE responds to revised NSPs

Date:

18 OCTOBER 2010

Director general of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) Tom Foulkes said:

“If half of all new generating capacity is to come from renewable sources by 2025, we are going to need to ramp up progress significantly. Government will need to focus not only on supporting the development of our indigneous renewable energy sources including wind, tidal and wave energy, but also supporting the development of the supply chain and skills base to support this growth, as well as eliminating the lingering obstacles to private investment. Clarity around the carbon price will be crucial, as will the reforms to OfGem’s remit, which must reflect today’s environmental challenges alongside its responsibility to the consumer.”

On nuclear energy he said:

“Nuclear energy is going to be a vital part of the UK’s future energy mix if we want to ensure we have a reliable, low carbon energy supply in years to come. Despite massive upfront costs, if Government can provide industry with clarity and confidence in the policy and regulatory environment that surrounds the new build programme, the private sector will be encouraged to drive these new plants forward.”
