ICE comments on Government's response to IGT report

Date:

22 JUNE 2011

Commenting on the Government’s response to the final IGT report ICE President Peter Hansford said:

“We welcome the Government’s commitment to involving industry in its approach to achieving its ambitious carbon reduction targets. Shifting to a low carbon economy requires a step change in the way engineers design, build, operate and maintain infrastructure - we need to achieve ‘value for carbon’ whereby we realise the maximum benefit from the minimum amount of embodied and emitted carbon over the whole life of our vital infrastructure assets.

“ICE is producing a report due out later this year, The Low Carbon Routemap to 2050, which will seek to drive this transition within the engineering profession, formulating an agenda for change, as well as highlighting to Government the crucial role it must play by providing the necessary policy, regulatory and financial frameworks to support industry action.

“We are also pleased to see the formation of a Green Construction Board. However it is critical that this group provides a strong lead to industry and Government, promoting a joined up approach to implementing the much-needed recommendations made in the final IGT report. To be effective the Board will need to be led by someone with significant standing within the construction industry and who commands respect among ministers and government officials.”
