ICE responds to Energy whitepaper

Date:

12 JULY 2011

Responding to the Energy whitepaper, Director General of the Institution of Civil Engineers Tom Foulkes said:

“Today’s white paper is a much-needed development. Creating certainty for investors is the only way the UK is going to guarantee a secure and affordable low carbon energy supply in the future and if we get it right the opportunity is there for the UK to become a market leader globally as an attractive, low risk place to invest.

“However it requires a careful balance between reforming the market to drive investment in a diverse energy mix, to which end the guaranteed price for electricity should be a significant incentive, and equally important engineering measures such as demand management and regulatory reform which will ensure that industry has the capacity - and confidence - to deliver such a massive programme of work.

”Urgent ratification of the energy NPSs is crucial to maintain investor confidence and ensure critical infrastructure programmes go ahead as planned.”
