ICE responds to new graduate employment statistics

Date:

2 NOVEMBER 2010

Responding to Higher Education Careers Services Unit (Hescu) figures that show 11.9 percent of civil engineering graduates are unemployed, ICE president Peter Hansford said:

“ICE’s own report showed that the UK’s infrastructure needs a complete overhaul to be fit for future and it is our profession who must deliver it. I can not reiterate strongly enough, now is not the time to make short-term cuts to graduate employment which will have long-term negative impacts for industry. ICE is committed to helping industry retain and develop its skill base so we can meet the challenges ahead.”

Notes to editors

The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) was founded in 1818 to ensure professionalism in civil engineering. It represents 80,000 qualified and student civil engineers in the UK and across the globe. The ICE has long worked with the government of the day to help it to achieve its objectives, and has worked with industry to ensure that construction and civil engineering remain major contributors to the UK economy and UK exports.
