ICE response to AA's suggestion that the profits from increased petrol VAT could be used to repair potholes

AA has said today that a rise in VAT profits from petrol could be diverted to repair all the potholes in the UK within 100 days.

Commenting, ICE Vice President Geoff French said:

“This idea is a step in the right direction and would help address the serious pot hole problem in the short term. However it must be recognised that this is a ‘quick fix’ solution which does not tackle the root of the problem. We need less quick fixes and more planned, preventative road maintenance that addresses existing road defects properly and on a long term basis. Short term solutions are not effective in withstanding the sorts of weather conditions we have seen over the past few weeks and will result in yet more maintenance backlogs and cost.”
