ICE response to low carbon construction review

Date:

17 MARCH 2010

Commenting on the emerging findings of the Innovation Growth Team review into Low carbon construction:

ICE President, Professor Paul Jowitt, said:

ICE welcomes the recognition in today’s findings, that the UK’s economic growth and productivity and our quality of life are dependent on high quality infrastructure.

Therefore we fully support the proposition to look into how the regulatory regime can be changed to ensure infrastructure is given more prominence and recognition as a primary facilitator of the transition to a low-carbon economy

We agree that to rise to the low carbon challenge, there must also be collaboration between industry, Government and the professions. This will enable the development of a standard industry-wide tool for clients and industry to measure the life-cycle carbon design impact of infrastructure solutions. Such a tool would ensure that carbon becomes a key factor when making decisions on future infrastructure.”

The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) was founded in 1818 to ensure professionalism in civil engineering. It represents 80,000 qualified and student civil engineers in the UK and across the globe. The ICE has long worked with the government of the day to help it to achieve its objectives, and has worked with industry to ensure that construction and civil engineering remain major contributors to the UK economy and UK exports.
