ICE welcomes 'twin track' approach from Davies Commission

Date:

2 NOVEMBER 2012

Commenting on the Terms of Reference for the Davies Commission on aviation capacity, Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) Aviation expert, Alex Lake, said:

“The Davies Commission’s is right to adopt a ‘twin track’ approach to this issue, which considers what could be delivered in the short term to keep the UK in the game, in addition to evaluating all options that will maintain the UK’s position as a leading aviation hub in the longer term. We are confident the Commission’s expertise on recent large scale engineering projects – not least the Olympics – will ensure it receives robust advice on the credibility, challenges and deliverability of all the solutions on the table.

“But if any of the recommendations are to become a reality within the required timescales, the Commission must look beyond 2015 and consider the political and governance arrangements for their delivery. In particular, the introduction of an Act of Parliament to create a special, time limited delivery body like the Olympic Delivery Authority. Such a body would be essential in providing focus and leadership for timely and efficient delivery of what will be a hugely complex project.”
