ICE response to salt rationing

SALT

Commenting on salt rationing across the country Director General of Institution of Civil Engineers Tom Foulkes said:

National salt supplies are now running dangerously low. With more snow predicted this week councils are going to struggle to keep roads open, causing further disruption to local economies as hundreds of workers are again unable to travel to work.

This could have been avoided. However, despite Government creating a body to coordinate and prioritise salt distribution in response to the snows last February, we are in exactly the same situation again now.

In future, we must have much better contingency plans in place to ensure our roads are not rendered unusable when snow hits.”

The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) was founded in 1818 to ensure professionalism in civil engineering. It represents 80,000 qualified and student civil engineers in the UK and across the globe. The ICE has long worked with the government of the day to help it to achieve its objectives, and has worked with industry to ensure that construction and civil engineering remain major contributors to the UK economy and UK exports.
