Commenting on today's call from Sir James Dyson to get children interested in engineering in schools through a better design and technology curriculum, Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) President Professor Barry Clarke, said:

"Sir James Dyson is right - more needs to be done to attract and inspire the engineers of the future and this must happen at an early age to ensure they can be steered down the right educational path in order to pursue a career in engineering.

"Maintaining the built environment, right through to delivering major civil engineering projects such as HS2 and the whole scale restructuring of our energy infrastructure over the next 10-20 years, cannot happen without engineers. Awe inspiring feats such as the Olympic Stadium, the Velodrome and the Shard also cannot be built without engineers. If we want world class infrastructure in the future, we must take action to ensure we have a world class workforce to deliver it."
