This year’s final took place on 19 February 2013 with the shortlisted finalists Charles Brooks, Joshua Macabuag and Adam Smith presenting their project reports in front of a packed audience of mostly graduate members at One Great George Street in London.
The final was recorded and you can view the evening event online.
The winner
Charles Brooks, from Arup was awarded the prestigious 2013 ICE James Rennie Medal for his project report titled ‘Canary Wharf Crossrail Station’.
Charles’s project report focused on the design and construction of the new station, particularly on the challenges the team had to overcome. Charles was involved right the way from scheme design through to a site placement during construction, working closely with the client and contractor throughout.
Talking to ICE after the final, Charles said 'I’m absolutely delighted to have won the James Rennie Medal. I was fortunate enough to work on a fantastic project in great teams, and it’s thanks to all these people that I was able to learn so much and gain such valuable experience in my early career.'
Charles, along with two other medal finalists, Joshua Macabuag, an Engineering Doctorate student, and Adam Smith, a Principal Engineer with Hyder Consulting, were selected from over 1,100 Professional Review candidates of 2012. They were chosen for their outstanding qualities in all attributes and the significant contribution to the promotion and development of civil engineering.
Joshua presented his project report Doha Development and Belgrave Sqaure whilst Adam gave a presentation on The Albert Bridge Strengthening and Restoration Scheme.

Alasdair MacLennan, chair of the judging panel at the James Rennie Medal Award final said, 'Again we have heard three excellent candidates, each delivering their presentations and responding to questions, on a complex project, demonstrating a high level of responsibility and very sound engineering knowledge.
'The winner handled a complex project in a sound and professional manner. Charles presented his role very clearly, with good use of visual aids, and responded to questions calmly and with authority.'
David Lloyd-Roach, Director of Membership said, 'The James Rennie Medal Award has firmly established itself on the calendar of our graduate members and their mentors as part of the training for Chartered Professional Review. This was evident by a packed Thomas Telford Theatre and the number of those attending online.
'ICE is also proud that the Jean Venables and Tony Chapman Medal Awards can join the James Rennie Medal in recognising and celebrating the value of the full breadth of ICE's professional qualifications.'
Charles will be presented with the medal and £1,000 cash prize at the ICE Annual Awards Ceremony in October 2012.
