This year’s three finalists and their projects are:
Charles Brooks - Engineer, Arup
Charles graduated in 2006 with an MEng (Hons) in Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering from the University of Cambridge.
Employment history
Charles joined Arup in 2007 after graduating and since then has worked in large multi-disciplinary teams on many high profile transport building projects. These have included King’s Cross Station Redevelopment and Kuwait International Airport as well as Canary Wharf Crossrail Station. He is currently working as the client’s technical advisor for the construction of wind turbine bases in the Port of Tilbury, Essex
Project
Charles’s project report, ‘Canary Wharf Crossrail Station’, describes the design and construction of the new station, which is currently being built in the North Dock of Canary Wharf, London. It focuses particularly on the challenges the team overcame with the design of the innovative tied cantilever cofferdam and the piled raft, which contributed to the project winning the Ground Engineering Award for Technical Excellence. Charles was involved right the way from scheme design through to a site placement during construction, working closely with the client and contractor throughout.
Joshua Macabuag
Joshua graduated in 2007 with an MEng in Engineering Science from the University of Oxford.
Employment History
Since graduating Joshua has worked with AECOM on a number of prestigious projects including Wimbledon Court 3, refurbishments and restorations of heritage buildings, and several large and complex developments in the Middle East. Josh has recently left his role as Senior Engineer at AECOM to begin an Engineering Doctorate (EngD) in Tsunami Vulnerability of Buildings at UCL
Joshua has also continued to pursue his passion for conducting international
work, having worked in South Africa and the UAE, and having carried out independent projects in Nepal and Peru. Joshua has recently left his role as Senior Engineer at AECOM to begin an Engineering Doctorate (EngD) in Tsunami Vulnerability of Buildings at UCL.
Project
Joshua’s project report describes his work on ‘Belgrave Square’. Joshua was responsible for detailed design, issue of construction information, and providing site presence during the high-specification refurbishment of a prestigious, Grade-1 listed property.
Adam Smith
Adam graduate in 1999 with a BEng in Civil Engineering from the University of Southampton.
Employment History
Adam has worked for a number of industry leading Engineering Consultancies, joining Hyder Consulting in 2005. He has taken a lead role in the assessment, strengthening and design of a variety of bridge structures including Auckland Harbour Bridge and Westgate Bridge in Melbourne.
He is currently a Principal Engineer within the bridge structures team at Hyder and is managing the technical output for numerous projects including the assessment and strengthening feasibility study of the New Rochester Bridge as well as developing options for the M4 Managed Motorway scheme.
Project
The Albert Bridge Strengthening and Restoration Scheme’ involved the sympathetic restoration of a Grade II* listed bridge crossing the Thames at Chelsea. Adam has taken a lead role in the scheme from the early options study, through the design phase and then as site Supervisor during the works. He hopes to relate some of the challenges faced in undertaking the works on this historic structure.
