Karen Burt Award

This award commemorates Dr Karen Burt and is given by the Women's Engineering Society.

The Karen Burt Award is presented annually to a high calibre newly-chartered female engineer, applied scientist or IT professional.

Who was Karen Burt?

Dr Karen Burt was an eminent physicist and an active member and Council office holder in the Women's Engineering Society. She was also a tireless campaigner for the recruitment and retention of women in science and engineering. From her own experience and her extensive research she was regarded as an expert in the management of career breaks and women 'returners' to engineering.

Am I eligible?

To be eligible for the award, the following criteria must be met:

  • You must be nominated by the Reviewers who conducted your Professional Review
  • You are a female Chartered Member
  • You have passed your Professional Review in the Autumn or Spring session prior to when the award is made

Nomination process

ICE can nominate one candidate each year for the Karen Burt Award . Candidates are initially nominated by their Reviewers on the basis that they have demonstrated a high standard of commitment to the promotion of their profession. The award provides the opportunity to recognise their skills and dedication.
From the pool of nominees a selection process will be undertaken and a finalist selected to represent the ICE.

All nominated candidates will be contacted and further details of the short- listing process will be given.

Karen Burt Award 2012 Winner

ICE is delighted that Member Kate Cooksey, employed by Morgan Sindall plc, is the winner of the 2012Karen Burt Award .

Kate collected her award at the Ada Lovelace Live! event which was held in London on 16 October 2012 at the Institute of Engineering and Technology.
