What is the Tony Chapman Medal?
The Tony Chapman Medal is awarded annually to the best Member Professional Review (MPR) candidate.
The aim of this award is to promote the awareness of the role of newly qualified Incorporated Members. It is open to all applicants who have passed their MPR in the previous year to when the award is made.
Who is Tony Chapman
The medal commemorates Tony Chapman (1948 – 2004) who contributed significantly in raising the profile of our Incorporated members.
Tony Chapman served on ICE Council, the Finance Committee, the Professional Development Committee and Chaired the Building Committee.
Tony was also a past Chairman of BIET and was instrumental in its integration within ICE. He was also a very active ICE Reviewer.
Nomination process
Reviewers will nominate potential recipients(s) for the medal based on whether the candidate:
- Exhibited a passion and enthusiasm for civil engineering
- Demonstrated an ongoing participation in ICE activities
- Enhanced the profession of civil engineering
- Outstanding qualities in all attributes
Three candidates will be shortlisted annually and are invited to present their MPR project reports to a judging panel at the final. The winner will be announced via ICE’s website and members’ enewsletter in March.
Prize
The winner receives £500 and is presented with the Tony Chapman Medal at the ICE Annual Awards Ceremony.

2013 winner and finalists
This year’s final took place on 15 January 2013 at ICE headquarters in London. The finalists who also competed for the 2013 Tony Chapman Medal were:
Lindsay Tassell IEng MICE
Lindsay graduated in 2007 with a BEng (Hons) degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Glasgow. Since graduation she has been employed by Mott MacDonald and has recently transferred to their Johannesburg office.
Lindsay is currently providing feasibility design, project management and construction supervision services to renewable energy projects in South Africa, as well as developing our local renewable energy team.
On winning the Tony Chapman Medal Lindsay says, “I am absolutely thrilled to have won as it was such an honour and a surprise to be nominated for this award. I couldn’t have won if it wasn’t for the excellent support I was given by my colleagues throughout my early years of professional development. This is their achievement as much as it is mine”.
Stuart Burgess IEng MICE
Stuart Burgess graduated in 2007 with a BEng (Hons) Degree in Civil & Environmental Engineering from Heriot Watt University.
He is currently employed by Interserve Construction where he holds the position of Senior Engineer.
Stuart is also a Temporary Works Coordinator, which involves working closely with the subcontractors to develop suitable designs to solve engineering problems in often challenging locations.
On being nominated for this prestigious award and in reaching the final three candidates Stuart said, “I will use the experience of this nomination process, as well as sharing my passion for Civil Engineering, to inspire other people to achieve IEng status whilst working towards CEng myself”.
Andrew Clarke IEng MICE
Andrew graduated in 2007 with a BEng (Hons) in Civil Engineering from the University of Exeter and joined Atkins in their Rail department through the Graduate scheme the same year.
Andrew is currently employed as a Project Manager with Atkins, managing the Plant and Distribution contract of the Cardiff Area Signalling Renewal multidisciplinary project for Network Rail. He is responsible for managing the design, procurement, installation and entry into service for power infrastructure for railway signalling equipment.
On reaching the final three top Member professional Review candidates, Andrew says “I was immensely proud when I read the NCE and noticed my name was highlighted for nomination for the Tony Chapman Medal. I feel extremely privileged to be having reached this far in this prestigious award.”
