Communications Competition

The ICE Communications Competition offers young civil engineers the opportunity to develop their communications skills in role play public consultation scenarios based around mock engineering scheme proposals and compete for the top prize of £500 cash.

About the competition

The ICE Communications Competition is open to student and graduate grades of ICE Member with no more than 7 years industry experience. Entry will be open from November/December with ‘Regional Rounds’ held in February and March, Semi Finals in April and the Final in May.

The teams choose a scenario and then prepare a public consultation strategy for the regional rounds and semi-final and then the pre-construction community relations strategy for the final. They present their case in front of a live audience and panel of judges and also produce a public information leaflet to support their presentation.

Ian Jenkinson, Communications Competition 2010 final judge, said:

“The competition has a real value to the profession and gives a lot of learning opportunities to the participants.”

Student entries are encouraged either as a team made up from one or more Universities or as individuals attached to a team of professionally experienced ICE members.

Teams will be made up of four people, except where a team has an individual student member, whereupon a team of five will be permitted.

ICE Communications Competition 2010 Final

The ICE Communications Competition 2010 final was held at Birmingham University on Wednesday 19 May 2010. It was an enjoyable evening with excellent presentations and lively debate.

The 2010 judges were Ian Jenkinson, Cameron Lindsay & Mike Rogers. They commented that:

“Every team produced work of and performed at a high standard.  It was our opinion that any of the teams and each of the individual members could be deployed in our respective organisations to carry out a similar project and we would be confident that it would be done effectively, professionally and with aplomb.”
