James Rennie Medal
Awarded to an engineer under the age of 35 who has demonstrated exceptional qualities in the use of engineering principles and construction knowledge in the design or construction of temporary or permanent works.
The objective is to recognise the importance of the design of the permanent works with and in relation to the temporary works and method of construction. The medal is awarded as a result of a competition. The finalists for the competition are selected from approximately 20 reports chosen by the Chartered Professional Reviewers from papers submitted by candidates from all regions who have entered for the Chartered Professional Reviews for that year.

MERIT Competition
MERIT (Management Enterprise Risk Integration and Teamwork) is a construction management simulation competition sponsored by ICE, the Construction Industry Training Board, Balfour Beatty and Mouchel International Consultants, and organised and run by Loughborough University. The competition, running since 1988, enables both construction professionals and students to augment their technical knowledge with the managerial skills required to run a modern construction company.
Each team operates as a board of directors and has the task of running a fictional company over eight quarterly rounds in a simulated market that is updated regularly to reflect changing conditions. The six leading teams from this first phase are invited to a two-day final at Loughborough University when they compete against one another for both contracts and resources.
Communications Competition
For over a decade the Communications Competition has helped younger engineers develop their public speaking and presentation skills. The winners will have fought their way through three rounds of mock public meetings, presenting controversial engineering projects to a potentially hostile audience. The winners will have shown their ability to not only present a technical case to a lay audience but also to understand and respond to people’s concerns, without losing control of the meeting.
2009 Graduates and Students Papers Competition Final
The Graduates and Students Papers Competition Final is entered by Associate Members, Graduates or Students with papers on engineering design, research or practice.
Competitors are judged on the basis of the subject, argument and style of the paper, its presentation, the discussion evoked and the author’s reply. The award comprises a medal, and an MBA for Engineering Managers at Manchester Business School.
For more information, visit the Graduates & Students Paper Competition website.
ICE Mentor of the Year Award
The ICE Graduate and Students network (GSNet) supports the award to promote and recognise the benefits of mentoring for professional development of young civil engineers.
