QUEST Technician Scholarship profile

Jenna Graham works for A-one+ and is currently studying civil engineering at New College, Durham for which she was awarded a QUEST Technician Scholarship

What were you hoping to achieve with your course?
I have enjoyed studying Mathematics throughout my school education and have always wanted to pursue a career in which I could utilise these skills. I chose this course because I feel that a career in civil engineering would be the best way for me to combine my mathematical knowledge with my interest in construction and it will continue to provide new challenges and innovative methods of working.

If you are working whilst you are studying, tell us a bit about where you are working and what you are doing.
I am currently employed by a company called A-one+ in the North East which is the managing agent contractor for the area 14 road network working on behalf of the Highways Agency. I began working for A-one in January 2009 as a Technical Assistant and quickly progressed into a Trainee Technician role. I work within a small team of eight people and often work alongside one of the senior engineers to learn new working methods and help them to progress their schemes as well as working on my own smaller projects. Much of my work is carried out on AutoCAD or preparing Health and Safety documentation for my schemes. I also undertake site investigations and take part in a Traffic Management Safety Forum where I give my views and opinions on safe methods of working on the network. Working as part of the integrated delivery team at A-one+ has given me a detailed insight into the design phase of delivering schemes by following company policies and procedures.

Why did you apply for the QUEST Technician Scholarship?
I applied for the scholarship after speaking to a former award winner who encouraged me to put myself forward. It is a very simple process and a good opportunity to reflect on your achievements and realise how much progress you have made since first joining the industry.

How do you think getting this scholarship will/has helped or changed you?
I plan to continue my education by completing an HND in civil engineering and then progressing onto a part-time degree course whilst working towards Technician membership. This scholarship has given me the self-confidence that I am able to achieve my goals.

Do you think that your scholarship will help you in your civil engineering career?
I feel that this award, combined with working towards Technician membership status will help me gain recognition for my achievements and give me the opportunity to network with like-minded individuals that have the same interests and are also working towards a similar goal. It will give me the confidence that I have the potential to become a professional engineer and help me in developing my skills while giving me the opportunity to excel in my future career.

What advice would you give to someone else who is thinking about applying for the Technician Scholarship?
I’d recommend the Technician Scholarship to everyone; it’s a fantastic opportunity that shouldn’t be missed! This scholarship helps give you the confidence to realise your full potential and it is a great opportunity to make others aware of your dedication and commitment to the civil engineering industry.
