You can apply for a scholarship if you are beginning the first year of a civil engineering degree in Autumn 2013 and
Applications aren’t accepted from anyone who’s already started a degree, anyone beginning a foundation year in Autumn 2013, part time students and anyone studying outside the UK.
Making an application
To apply you'll need to do two things before the deadline of 7 June 2013:
1. Complete a QUEST Undergraduate Scholarship application form and email it to quest.application@ice.org.uk
2.Get a referee to complete our QUEST Undergraduate Scholarship reference form and email it to quest.reference@ice.org.uk
Your referee should know you well enough to write about you and if you're studying or have recently left school or college, a reference from your school or college will be expected.
If you would jus t like to be considered for a QUEST only scholarship please state this on the email you send with your application. Due to the limited number of these scholarships, this will significantly lower the chances of being successful.
When an application or reference form is emailed to us, an automatic response is sent to confirm we’ve received the forms.
The things we look for in applicants
The scholarship is for students who are committed to civil engineering, who have the potential to excel as civil engineers and display all round excellence. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of a commitment to civil engineering, academic ability, leadership skills, aptitude for teamwork, ambition, initiative, strength of character and determination, so it’s important to cover these things in your application.
First stage selection
After the deadline the QUEST Committee will select which applicants to invite to the QUEST interview day. The interview day is held in London on Friday 13 September 2013 and applicants must be available to attend the day. Any applicants due to attend a university in Northern Ireland will be entered into a separate process and considered for an interview day held in Belfast in September, details of which will be given to selected applicants at a later date.
Everyone invited for an interview is sent a list of companies offering sponsorship along with information on each company. Applicants are asked to research each company and tell us which five companies they would most like to be interviewed by. The application forms of everyone invited to the interview day are sent to participating companies who are told which applicants would like an interview with them. Companies then select and tell us which applicants they would like to interview. We cannot guarantee that every applicant will have interviews with companies as this is dependent on whether a company wishes to offer an interview and scheduling. Applicants will be sent individual timetables before the interview day showing the interviews they will have on the day.
Interview day
The interview day is held at the Institution of Civil Engineers, London on Friday 13 September 2013. The QUEST Committee/ICE and companies have several small teams of interviewers who conduct over 300 interviews throughout the day. Every applicant will have an interview with the QUEST Committee/ICE on the day, how many company interviews someone will have depends on company interest and scheduling, but no one can have more than five company interviews. QUEST will contribute to reasonable travel expenses incurred whilst travelling to and from the interview day.
Final selection and company matching
Following the interview day the QUEST Committee select which applicants to be entered into consideration for a scholarship. Those who had company interviews and were selected by the QUEST Committee are entered into a process that matches applicants with companies. Anyone who had two or more company interviews will be asked for their first, second and third choice company as part of this process. Anyone who is not matched with a company or did not have any company interviews will be considered for a QUEST only or C F Lunoe Trust scholarship.
All applicants will be notified whether or not they have been successful by the end of October 2013. The decision will be final and feedback to individuals who are not successful will not be given. The first scholarship payment is usually made in December.
