Peter Hansford is a specialist in project and programme management. As an executive director of the Nichols Group, he leads the Regions and Government sector for the company. Prior to rejoining Nichols in June 2004, he was a partner at Gardiner & Theobald and previously Executive Director Infrastructure at the Strategic Rail Authority.
Peter´s early career was with Amey Roadstone Construction, followed by Maunsell Consultants Asia in Hong Kong. He joined Nichols in 1986 as a consultant and was assigned as engineering manager for the Docklands Light Railway City Extension, followed by project manager for the Beckton Extension. He was appointed managing director of Nichols Associates Ltd in 1996.
Peter has over 30 years experience in the creation, development and execution of major projects. He has worked for government, public and private clients, consultants and contractors in a variety of industry sectors in the UK and overseas. He has been engaged in strategic consulting and advising on infrastructure developments and capital investment programmes.
He has carried out reviews and audits of project management and governance for many of the major rail schemes in the UK, several power station projects, the Scottish Parliament Building for the Auditor General Scotland, the Dubai Metro Project and the High Speed Train Replacement Project for the Department for Transport. He was a founding non executive director of Cross London Rail Links Limited.
Peter serves ICE as Vice President, Membership. He was Vice President, Finance and Business Management for the 2005-6 session and Chairman of the Finance Committee from 2003 to 2006. He has been a member of Council since 2000 and on the Executive Board since 2002. He is a director of both Thomas Telford Limited and Thomas Telford (Holdings) Limited.
Peter has chaired the Legal Action Working Group, set up by Council to consider the ICE´s policy in relation to corporate manslaughter and associated legislation, and was a member of the recent Governance Working Party. He chaired the expert panel on procurement as part of the Engineering without Frontiers Presidential Commission.
His previous service to ICE includes membership of the Engineering Project Management Forum (1990-94), Engineering Management Committee (1993-95), Procurement Forum (1995-97), Management Board (1997-2000) and Commercial Management Board (1998-2000).
