Biography:
Professor Quentin Leiper is the director for engineering and the environment at Carillion plc. where he is responsible for leading Carillion´s sustainability programme and for reporting, technical engineering, research and links with professional institutions and universities.
Quentin has over 30 years experience in both operational management and technical roles in the construction industry. He graduated in civil engineering in 1975 from Glasgow University, has an MSc in Geotechnical Engineering, and is a chartered civil engineer and a chartered environmentalist.
He spent 16 years working for specialist sub-contractors in foundations, ground treatment and geotechnical engineering before joining Carillion in 1991. Some of the major projects he has worked on include Canary Wharf and Canada Water stations, Tees Barrage and the Copenhagen Metro.
Since 2000 Quentin has also been responsible for environmental issues and he initiated and led Carillion´s sustainability strategy and corporate responsibility programme. This programme was recognised nationally by Business in the Community, who awarded Carillion their Impact on Society Award and named them as their Company of the Year in 2003.
Quentin has been involved in a wide range of committees, forums and awards panels in the construction industry, including leading the formation of and serving as chairman of the BGA (British Geotechnical Association).
He is a former director and Council Member of CIRIA (Construction Industry Research and Information Association) and a member of two British Standards committees. More recently he has been a member of two working groups set up by the Sustainable Procurement Task Force and the UK Construction Industry Sustainability Forum.
Quentin was a member of the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council´s Built Environment College and a number of research steering groups. He has published almost 50 papers and articles on a range of subjects, including;

- piling
- reinforced soil
- ground radar
He was the founding editor of ICE´s Proceedings journal Engineering Sustainability, and a former member of the ICE Proceedings journal, Geotechnical Engineering editorial panel.
Since 1998, Quentin has been a Visiting Professor in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Edinburgh, where he is involved in both teaching and research and is chairman of the School Advisory Board. He has also served on the civil engineering Advisory Boards of Nottingham, Southampton and City Universities. He is a regular lecturer and speaker at universities and conferences. He has been a judge for the Science, Engineering and Technology Student of the Year Award since the award inception in 1997.
Quentin lives in Bridgnorth, Shropshire with his architect wife Dorothy and their three children. He enjoys hockey and regularly flies over 20 different designs of kites, some homemade. He is a lapsed dingy racer and a recent convert to traction kiting. Quentin enjoys playing tenor sax and clarinet, although admits that he plays both badly. |
