Biographical Details:
Dr Scott Steedman has been Director of Group Strategy for international capital project consultants HPR (High-Point Rendel) since November 2006. Scott has spent most of his career in senior corporate roles in major consulting and design companies where he has led strategic initiatives in business improvement, professional development and quality management systems. He has maintained a strong technical dimension throughout, providing expert review and troubleshooting advice on a wide range of building and infrastructure projects in the UK and internationally. Initially a Fellow and Lecturer in Engineering at Cambridge University, he joined Sir Alexander Gibb & Partners Ltd (later LAWGIBB, now Jacobs) in 1993, becoming Director of Engineering in 1995. He was Director of Civil Engineering at Whitbybird from 2000-2003.
His technical expertise is in risk and disasters, geotechnical and urban engineering and innovation. He has been a technical expert for the US Army Corps of Engineers for over twelve years including the Federal investigation into the flooding in New Orleans in 2005, for which he was awarded the Outstanding Civilian Service Medal.
Scott is a member of the Defence Scientific Advisory Council (DSAC), which advises the MoD on science, engineering and technology issues. He is a Vice President of the Institution of Civil Engineers, responsible for Public Affairs and also a Vice President of the Royal Academy of Engineering and Editor in Chief of the Academy´s flagship Ingenia magazine. He was President of the European Council for Construction Research, Development and Innovation from 1997-2008.
Scott has extensive television and radio experience including presenting a 13 part series for Discovery called, 'How did they build that?' and producing programmes on the engineering of Ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome. He is regularly called upon by the media for comment on engineering issues.
